“It feels like a strange time to be releasing music with everything that’s going on in the world!”
Dutch Criminal Record burst onto the scene in 2014. They’ve since gone onto support indie giants such as Sea Girls, SPINN, and Ra Ra Riot, with hits such as ‘Socks & Sandals’ and ‘Graduate’ quickly gaining traction. Portsmouth-bred and bursting with energy, their music emulates a 60s surfer sound. FUZZY caught up with DCR ahead of the release of their brand new single, ‘Feel Good’. These guys are certainly ones to watch.
FUZZY: Describe your music in three words!
Fun, energetic, surfy.
FUZZY: 'Feel Good' is out on the 26th of June. Could you tell us a little bit about that? How does it feel to be releasing music during COVID-19?
It’s a good feeling to be bringing some new music out as it feels like we haven’t been able to do a lot of the stuff we’d initially planned for 2020. Our spring tour got cancelled midway through. It feels like a strange time to be releasing music with everything that’s going on in the world!
FUZZY: You've supported Sea Girls on tour in the past! How was that?
It was really fun but quite strange as it was a secret show that we played with them and they actually went on first!
FUZZY: What's your favourite gig you've ever played and why?
There have been loads of good ones, but we usually cite three: our headline show at the Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth last August; our sold-out Bristol Rough Trade show in March 2020, and our set at Victorious Festival 2018. All brilliant in different ways but each had amazing crowds.
FUZZY: What is the main thing you want people to take from your music?
Good question. I guess we want people to feel better after listening to our music than how they were feeling before it, be that because they’ve listened to it on a road trip with mates, whilst doing the washing up, or they just had a bad day. We want to improve all those situations and more.
FUZZY: What have you been streaming during the lockdown? Any top picks?
It’s been a very helpful way to pass the time! As well as old favourites this is what we’ve been listening to:
Joe: Lonely Benson, Oscar Lang and Moow.
Framps: HAIM, Rolling Blackouts C.F., Chappaqua Wrestling.
Sam: The Strokes, Beach Bunny, Blah Blah Blah.
FUZZY: Finally: if you could travel back in time to attend any gig, what would it be?
There are so many amazing gigs that we’d love to have seen but either The Strokes MTV $2 Bill just because it is just so iconic, or The Beatles at The Cavern Club, knowing they’re on the cusp of success.
Words by Eleanor Noyce.
22nd June 2020.
