“Eilish’s single is the beacon we need to reassure us that a better future will come, and to keep holding on until it does.”
The opening lines to Billie Eilish’s new single ‘My Future’ set the tone perfectly, shifting between major and minor chords with the hauntingly beautiful voice that is signature to Eilish. The song starts out bare, with reverberation and layering of voices adding to the enchanting tone. In an email to her fans upon its release, Eilish explained that she wrote the single when the US was entering into lockdown and despite its initial focus on self-reflection, took on a new meaning in relation to the global pandemic. "Do you understand / I’ve changed my plans", was one lyric that particularly resonated with me, accurately capturing the capricious nature to the times we are all living through.
The single starts out bare, forcing listeners to hold on in anticipation, and seamlessly moves into an upbeat, percussion-filled background. The lyrics reveal a mesmerising love song dedicated to hope, self-growth and ambition; declaring that, "But I know better / Than to drive you home / ‘Cause you’d invite me in / And I’d be yours again." It lacks the same darkly witty undertones that define most of her other music, which I hope will still be present on her second album that she is currently in the process of writing. Nevertheless, Eilish’s single is the beacon we need to reassure us that a better future will come, and to keep holding on until it does.
