"Begging you to leave your worries on the sand and dive into the clear blue, 'Solar Power' encapsulates the heady, romantic rush that is irresistible when under the summer heat."

'Solar Power' single artwork.

Lorde promised we would watch her “disappear into the sun” on Melodrama. What she didn’t mention, however, was that she would emerge under the rays of the sun four years later having transcended to her most ethereal, incandescently happy self. The one solar eclipse of 2021 saw the release of ‘Solar Power’ – the co-produced with Jack Antonoff (of course) first glimpse of Lorde’s third studio album of the same name. It’s a departure from the moody, sad girl summer experience Lorde’s music previously provided, but it’s one that glimmers in its newfound joy.

It’s the kind of stress-free bliss we’ve all been desperately searching for of late – easy acoustic guitars place Lorde’s voice centre stage, and it’s absolutely fizzing with barely contained happiness. It leaves any dramatics behind, and instead chases that dizzying high delivered by the summer sun. Begging you to leave your worries on the sand and dive into the clear blue, 'Solar Power' encapsulates the heady, romantic rush that is irresistible when under the summer heat. Anything goes when the sun is beating down, as long as that anything leaves you feeling exhilaratingly euphoric.

Lorde takes all the staples of a beach day – the lingering scent of your SPF, the feel of the warm sand between your toes, the wash of cool waves over your fingers, a fresh smattering of freckles across your cheeks. Somehow, she bottles them all into one cool, sensual pop smash. Best served with ice and a slice of lime.
