Maisie Peters is back, and she comes armed with your new summer anthem. ‘Sad Girl Summer’ is pure arms to the sky pop delight, and it is destined to be on your playlists till the leaves start to brown again (and probably beyond).
It meanders away from some of her earlier releases: chances are, it won’t make you sob like ‘Personal Best’ definitely did (thanks for that, Maisie). Nevertheless, she shines against this sunnier setting. With a guitar riff that could’ve come straight out of the early 2000s, it’s lowkey but intensely empowering. As ever, her strength as a lyricist radiates through; playful and universal, she’s a master of weaving her tales.
In this case, it is a tale of girls coming together and supporting each other, a narrative we need and love. Essentially, it’s a call to arms: gather your girl gang and get a little bit “vodka coke unsteady”. A farewell to toxicity, ‘Sad Girl Summer’ encourages you to disregard everything in your life that isn’t contributing something positive. It is the reminder that we all needed to take the time to celebrate the good things and stop wasting our energy on anything else; a reminder that comes wrapped in a stunning slice of sun-kissed pop.
