Ahead of their new album Death of the Party being released on August 28th, The Magic Gang have released new single '(The World) Outside My Door' for their listeners to get a glimpse into what can be expected.
“Written while the Extinction Rebellion protests were happening around London,” as Jack Kaye states, the song is about revolution. He continued: “I had this real sense that everybody around me was taking part in history while I was holed up in my bedroom trying to write an album. It’s quite a guilt-laden song about feeling that you should be doing more.” The very title of the song connotes this message: the world on your doorstep is the only one we will get, so we should collectively be kind to the planet and each other.
The song is beautifully paced, with a slow tempo and a blissful rift, which is both relaxing and thought-provoking. The repetition of the lyrics “I’m gonna make a change” powerfully hones in on the idea of what the band wanted to address with this song. The lyrics also include a variety of naturalist imagery, again perfectly alluding to the environment which corresponds with the meaning behind it. Its purpose is to evoke thought about making much-needed societal reforms. The lyrics offer a sense of urgency, with lines such as “first thing” and “losing my breath”, which dramatically contrasts the melody, yet seems purposely done in order to cleverly create a juxtaposing dynamic throughout the song.
The Magic Gang usually have upbeat, toe-tapping tunes. This is a bit different from what is typically seen from the band, but a welcomed change as the song is a lovely listen with an important message.
