"Whilst this song very much returns to their original sound, it is definitely more refined."

You Me At Six are back, and with a bang. Their new single, 'MAKEMEFEELALIVE', definitely wasn’t made for a quiet return for the band. The riffs in this song take me back to their glory days of Sinners Never Sleep and, quite honestly, my fourteen-year own self is fangirling and getting major nostalgia of the Josh Franceschi posters on my bedroom wall.

It has been explained by Josh that "This song is about having control, it being taken away from you and then finally reclaiming it. The video is all about the notion of needing to see clearly to feel alive. The desire of understanding where you started, and where you're going, so you know when you get there.”

The song is explosive, with a real punk vibe throughout. The video, with chaotic visuals and a cameo from Leigh Gill, the Game of Thrones actor, is chaotic but fitting. It all seems like a perfect combination. The visuals, the sound and the lyrics combined portray the idea of power and taking it back, which is clearly the effect they were looking for.

Their single released in February this year, 'Our House (The Mess We Made)', raised money for the Australian bushfires. Whilst the cause was brilliant, the track didn’t feel like them. The overall feel of the song was quite pop like rather than punky. But, 'MAKEMEFEELALIVE' is redemptive, quintessentially You Me At Six. It returns to sounds such as 'Contagious Chemistry' and 'Bite My Tongue'. Whilst this song very much returns to their original sound, it is definitely more refined.

You Me At Six have been teasing us on the release of their seventh studio album, and this was the first taste of what we can expect.

22nd August 2020.
